Went to the arts centre last week to check out Robert Ballaghs solo exhibition EGO. He has a series of self portraits and drawings on display there, I never seen his work before my encounter last week, I think he is technically good but while I was looking at the work I thought there was too much EGO in it for me to handle too many self portraits! His signature which looks like a trademark logo of some sort annoyed me I thought it was quite pretentious. He had a book of his work and you had to wear a pair of gloves to flick through it I didn’t bother looking apparently the book was worth 3,000 euro I wouldn’t wear the gloves if it was worth a million euro. Ballagh wasn’t even there but he managed to annoy me! Today I went back to the arts centre and there he was! Giving a talk on his work, So I listened..And he said that ego wasn’t about being egotistical..But about “I” about him…I found that hard to swallow! He also talked about how he liked to annoy people with his work well that’s something he can do well its a pity I can’t say the same about his work. Robert Ballagh, Arts Centre.

Good observations Orla the initials come Albrecth Durer so he is self consciously linking to the Master work. Brian

yeah he seems to like the role of “outsider” yet all the commissions he gets doesn’t seem to reflect this status. while i was there he was telling a story about someone ringing him up to do a portrait of a famous opera diva- real “outsider” art!

tell it like it is orla! yeah he seems to court negative remarks, shows how confident/arrogant he is. have to admit he is technically pretty good. just seems a waste of a talent to do endless self-portraits.

  4. tell it as you see it orla! yeah it seems like a waste of talent, there must be something better to explore besides himself.
